Inspiration: Patterns Around Hamilton

It was so lovely today, I just had to go for a walk first thing this morning. I love being out & about early, before the sun burns that crisp scent from the air & before the traffic intrudes on that wonderful alone-in-the-world feeling. I barely made it out in time, but it was well worth it!

I was feeling a bit low on inspiration, so I brought my camera along & took a ton of photos. Success! As soon as I returned home, I jumped into my sketchbook & filled a few pages.

I was going to post an update to my 31 Skirts project this afternoon, but in order to set the stage for my creative space tomorrow, I thought I would show you some of the photos that found their way into my sketchbook pages.

Warning! There's more than just a few!

First - the graffiti:
This is the first tag I saw - it amused me that you could clearly see that a template was used.Arrows were all over the place - though usually on the bike path. I chose to take a photo of this squiggle instead:As I took a photo of this fence, I zeroed right in on this really neat tree:This rock wall was dotted all over with fluorescently bright paint. It was actually quite pretty. The graffiti was pretty much the only colour out there this time of year.On my way back, I saw this amazing mural / store front on King St:
Next - some patterns & texture:This was the aim of my walk. I saw this roof / building over the weekend when we drove from storage to groceries, & I just knew I needed to take a photo of it. The texture is beyond amazing & the shadow is pretty cool too.The green "fencing" on this house is gorgeous.Hamilton has some really nice manhole covers. This building was full of patterns that really complemented each other. The colour is terrible though...The colours on this cement wall are what made me take the photo.I love the pattern on this fence! This was the first thing I saw that I really wanted to draw right then & there.Nice paving stones.Roofing & shingles are really inspiring.I didn't think this would be a particularly interesting photo - it's just the underside of an overpass - but the pattern I drew from it is lovely!Ooooooh... this is probably my favourite shot of the day. I absolutely love the peeling paint on this old brick building. I was sad to see a sign saying there are plans to tear it down for a condo... Typical. You can make more money off a new building than you can refurbishing an old one.

There are many more photos, but these are the best of the bunch!
My inspiration level is all topped up, what about yours?

My Newest Painting

As promised, here's a peek at my latest painting, a mixed-media piece called Take the Plunge.
This is by far my favourite finished painting. While I prefer the yellow background I showed you last Thursday, & I'll probably end up loving that finished piece more, it is as yet unfinished. So this soaring bird is my current fave. Here's where I've hung the painting for now (& I may be secretly hoping I get to keep it for some time, as it's a perfect addition to this corner of my living room):A closer look at a corner of the background:I absolutely love the texture the layers provide.

Although I've already shown the following photos on my blog, it's been a long time. So, for fun, here's a look at the very beginning of this painting:First, a layer of gesso. I wrote a few thoughts in charcoal while it was still wet for added texture.Next a layer of watercolour & then some collage:You can find the finished piece here.

What do you think of my latest painting?

Recipe: Seedy Banana Date Muffins

These seedy muffins are pretty healthy, so you don't have to feel guilty for eating one or two for breakfast! They're pretty easy to modify too, which I love. I'll outline some different modifications you can use below.

Seedy Banana Date Muffins

Ingredients:

3/4 cup mixed seeds (sesame, poppy, flax, sunflower, pumpkin, anise)
1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
1/2 cup chopped pecans
2 bananas, mashed
1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp vanilla (or 1 tsp if using vanilla yogurt)
2 eggs
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tbsp wheat germ (optional)
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cream of tartar

Methods:

1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line a muffin tin with muffin cups.

2. Mix the seeds first. Here's where you can be most creative. Use whatever seeds you have on hand, though it's best if they aren't salted (my pumpkin seeds were - I rubbed some of the salt off with a paper towel). I like to use 1 tbsp of anise seeds because the flavour is a perfect complement to the dates, but too much can be overpowering. The first time I made these, I didn't have poppy seeds & I found them to be a bit less dry than when they're included. If that seems to be the case when you mix everything together, feel free to add a bit more yogurt for moisture.

3. Reserve 3 tbsp of seeds.
4. Chop your dates. If you prefer not to have chunks of date in your muffins, you can blend them with 1/2 cup of water (using a blender or food processor). If you go this route, only use 1 banana & 1/4 cup of yogurt. Chop your pecans & mash your bananas.

5. Mix your wet ingredients (banana, yogurt, oil, vanilla & eggs). If you opted to blend your dates with water, mix them in too.

6. Mix the dry ingredients (sugars, flours, wheat germ, baking soda, salt & cream of tartar). If you decided to chop your dates, add them into the dry ingredients now. This will ensure that they don't all clump together (as they are very sticky).
7. Gently mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. As with all muffin batter, do not overmix. Just stir until everything is moistened.Fold in the seeds (less 3 tbsp) & pecans.
8. Fill your muffin cups. Remember those 3 tbsp of seeds?Sprinkle them on top of each muffin.
9. Bake for 18-20 minutes. This recipe yielded 18 muffins for me. Since I only have 1 muffin pan that holds a dozen muffins, the second batch was only half full. When this happens, make sure to fill the remaining cups with water so that your muffins bake evenly.
Enjoy! These are particularly tasty warm & buttered!

Weekly Forecast

Last week was pretty good. I didn't nearly accomplish as much as I wanted to, but I tend to set lofty goals for myself. I like having lots of options - I'd rather check off half my list than none of it because I wasn't motivated. Of course, that means I often don't get to the important stuff...

Last week I finished my Yoga Challenge & started the intermediate set. We ate really well, especially in the beginning of the week. I started my Map Project, I painted, I read & we went to a hockey game Friday night. Unfortunately, my job search wasn't top priority & that really needs to change. I just can't seem to motivate myself to do it - especially when I haven't received any responses so far. It's just so frustrating & downright depressing.

Still, carry on it must...

Here's the plan for this week:
  • JOB SEARCH! Everyday & for more than a couple hours each day!
  • work on folding my Map Project - I want the folding to be interesting & reveal different art on the back
  • list a painting, finish a painting & work on a painting
  • take out my light box & photograph some inventory that remains to be listed
I was really happy with my blogging last week & want to keep it up. I didn't post anything over at Science Byte though, so I want to this week for sure.
  • updates on my yoga challenge, Map Project & 31 Skirts
  • a quick & easy recipe
  • a look at the new painting I'm planning on listing
  • open recruitment for ACEO-X 4.0
  • a new science post or 2 over at Science Byte
Here's hoping for a productive week!

I hope everyone has a great week!

Project 52: 10/52

Week 10 - here's my photo: I thought these sepia tones went well with the little globe I have nestled on my bookcase.

I'd love it if you'd participate with me in this challenge! The rules are simple - take 1 photo a week, for 52 weeks. No theme, just a photo of something that sparked your interest during the week. Feel free to use my Project 52 banner as well. Either right click on the image above & save it on your computer, or follow this link & download it from Flickr.

Once you've taken your photo, post it online somewhere & add your link in the submission box below.
